You Are Allowed to Change Providers. Here Is Exactly How It Works.
This is an awkward article for a provider to write, so let us be upfront about that.
We are going to explain how to leave an NDIS provider. Including, in principle, us.
We are writing it because over three weeks we have encouraged you to ask hard questions of whoever supports you. It would be hollow to do that and then stay quiet about what happens if the answers are not good enough.
First, the thing many people do not realise
You can add, change or remove providers at any time. You do not need a reason that satisfies anybody. You do not need to wait for a plan reassessment. You do not need permission.
The NDIA's own guidance is that you can talk to your my NDIS contact or call 1800 800 110 to add, change or remove providers.
Choice and control is not a slogan printed on a scheme's brochure. It is a working right, and it means very little if people do not know they hold it.
The steps, in order
Read your current service agreement first. It should set out how long the agreement runs and how changes or endings are handled, including any notice period. Knowing this before you act keeps everything straightforward.
Look for providers properly. Use the NDIA Provider Finder or the NDIS Commission provider register. Ask people you trust. Ask around your community, your support coordinator, your local networks. And check the register for any suspensions, revocations or compliance actions, because that is exactly what it is published for.
Meet them before you commit. The NDIA recommends meeting a provider before you start working with them, and it is good advice. Sit with them. Bring family. Ask the questions from last week's article. Notice whether you feel rushed.
Get a written service agreement. A written agreement makes clear what you have both agreed to, including how long it runs and how changes can be made. If a provider is reluctant to put things in writing, treat that as information.
Tell your current provider. Ask whether they have a form or process for ending a service agreement, and make sure there are no outstanding payments. Then follow their process.
Update your provider relationships in the my NDIS participant portal so your records reflect reality.
Arrange the overlap thoughtfully. If you can, have the new supports starting as the old ones finish, particularly for daily personal care. This is the practical step that gets forgotten, and it is the one that matters most on the ground.
Changing providers is not disloyalty
A number of participants and families have told us over the years that they stayed too long with support that was not working, because leaving felt ungrateful.
We want to say this plainly, as a provider: you do not owe a provider your loyalty at the expense of your quality of life.
Providers are service organisations, funded through your plan, delivering supports you are entitled to. A good one will want you to have support that genuinely fits, even when that is not them. A provider who makes you feel guilty for reconsidering has told you something important about how they see the relationship.
The reverse is also true. If your support is working, if your workers know you, if you feel safe and respected, that is worth a great deal and it is worth keeping. Change for its own sake is not a virtue either.
If you are considering us
We are not going to pretend we have no interest in this. We would love to support more people across Western Sydney and greater Sydney.
But we would rather be chosen carefully than chosen quickly.
So here is our honest pitch. Freedom Quality Care is a registered NDIS provider. We deliver personal care, domestic assistance, community nursing, social and community participation, home and garden maintenance, allied health, transport, support coordination, and SIL and SDA services across Sydney. Our support workers and Care Managers are based here, in this community.
Our workers in risk-assessed roles hold current screening clearances. Our care plans are built with you, not for you. We work to bring genuine cultural understanding into every home, in a region that is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse in the country. And we treat the people we support as a Boss, a King, a Queen, never a file number.
Check us on the register before you call. Ask us the hard questions when you do. Bring your family, bring your language, and take all the time you need to decide.
That is how this is supposed to work. For us, and for every provider you consider.
Warmly,

Ruby Akron, COO
